Munich is ideal for watching tawny owls because of its large park areas with lots of old trees. But where? And when?

Tawny owls have the wonderful habit of living in their burrows for many years. Once a suitable shelter has been found, it is not abandoned so quickly unless circumstances change – for example, if the roof leaks – or another owl enters the territory.
The old beech and oak trees in Munich’s parks provide ideal conditions for owls – for example in the English Garden or Nymphenburg Palace Park. The latter is always worth a visit because of the large population of geese, the goosander breeding there and the scenery.
The most famous owl lives opposite Badenburg Castle, where a small bridge crosses the canal to the east of the castle. If you stand where all the grass is trampled and look north-east, you can watch Casimir – as he is called – on sunny days in the afternoon or on cloudy days often all day long.

Tawny owls can be observed in Munich all year round, although it is of course most difficult to spot the rather small birds through the canopy in summer.
