As the largest wild cat in Europe, it plays a crucial role in the forest ecosystem. However, the lynx is still threatened with extinction in Bavaria. Its gradual return to the Bavarian Forest is not a matter of course, but the result of decades of conservation efforts, especially by Luchs Bayern e.V.. Only through careful lynx monitoring and targeted conservation measures can its survival in the wild be ensured. In this article, I shed light on the history of the lynx in the Bavarian Forest, current population figures and development trends in Bavaria, as well as modern monitoring methods and conservation measures aimed at preserving this charismatic species.

The history of the lynx in the Bavarian Forest

Komm mit raus.

Current population figures and development trends in Bavaria

Camera traps for lynx monitoring

Ecological significance of the lynx in the forest

Conservation measures and outlook

Lynx conservation requires robust monitoring

How does Luchs Bayern e.V. engage in protecting the lynx in Bavaria?

Conclusion

The history of the lynx in the Bavarian Forest

The lynx was once native to almost all of Germany, but was eradicated by the end of the 19th century. In the Bavarian Forest, the last lynx was killed in 1848, after which the species was considered extinct there. Reintroduction efforts only began in the 1970s: in 1970, several lynxes were released in the Bavarian Forest National Park, albeit with limited success. Between 1982 and 1989, further releases followed - this time in the neighboring Czech Bohemian Forest (Šumava National Park). From these animals, today's Bavarian-Bohemian lynx population developed. The return of the lynx to the Bavarian Forest is fundamentally considered a conservation success story: it demonstrates that extinct species can be reestablished through consistent measures.

However, despite this reintroduction, lynx numbers have stagnated since the 2000s. Currently, the population in the Bavarian-Bohemian region comprises only a few dozen independent animals. This small lynx population in the Bavarian Forest is particularly significant, as it represents one of the three remaining lynx populations in all of Germany. At the same time, it serves as an important link between the lynx populations of Central Europe - its long-term protection therefore has high priority in species conservation.

Fototouren & Workshops

Komm mit raus.

Gemeinsam verfeinern wir deine fotografischen Fähigkeiten — in kleinen Gruppen, mitten in der Wildnis. During the period from May 2023 to April 2024, a total of 73 independent lynxes and 22 juveniles were recorded in Bavaria. In the previous year, the figures were significantly lower with 58 independent animals and 24 juveniles.

These low population figures illustrate the challenges in lynx conservation:

Isolation of individual populations: In Germany there are only a few lynx populations, which are also spatially separated from each other. Exchange between these groups hardly occurs.

Risk of inbreeding: Due to isolation, mating-related inbreeding is already occurring in the population, which can impair the fitness of the animals in the long term.

Limited genetic diversity: Small and isolated populations suffer from genetic impoverishment. In the long term, this leads to reduced fertility and higher susceptibility to diseases.

Vulnerability to local extinction: With so few animals, there is a risk that a local population will become extinct due to random events - such as diseases or a series of accidents. Thus, the proverbial sword of Damocles of extinction hangs over the mini-population in northeastern Bavaria if countermeasures are not taken.

Caution when interpreting the figures

However, the documented records do not automatically reflect the actual population. A significant proportion of the recorded lynxes are only temporarily on Bavarian soil and originate largely from the Bohemian Forest or the adjacent Mühlviertel. Often these animals only stay in Bavaria briefly - sometimes only for a few hours or days. Estimates suggest that approximately 20 to 25 percent of the records must be attributed to neighboring foreign countries.

In addition: not all lynxes registered during the recording period are still alive at the end of the year. Deaths - for example from traffic accidents - further distort the picture. In 2023, for example, six lynxes fell victim to road traffic.

A realistic picture of population development can only be obtained through close-meshed and continuous monitoring. A comprehensive network of camera traps and close cooperation with the Czech Republic and Austria are essential. Only through cross-border evaluation can it be traced where the animals actually reside permanently and which regions play a key role in the survival of the species.

On a positive note: comparing the two most recent recording periods, there is an increase in independent lynxes of around 26 percent.

However, a critical indicator for the viability of the population is the number of reproductive females with young. Here a decline is evident: from twelve documented mother animals in 2022, the number fell to eleven the following year. Particularly concerning: in some sub-regions such as the Fichtelgebirge and the Frankenwald, only a single female with offspring was registered in each case.

Despite a slight increase in overall numbers, the level remains low. For comparison: in 2019 and 2020, up to 98 lynxes and 14 and 13 reproducing females respectively were documented. Current values are below these peak figures and do not indicate stable development.

Camera traps for lynx monitoring

To keep a close eye on the lynx population, proven monitoring techniques are used in the Bavarian Forest. The most important method is the use of camera traps, i.e. automatically triggered wildlife cameras. This photographic monitoring provides valuable insights into the occurrence and behavior of the shy wildcats without disturbing them. In particular, the photographic documentation of individual lynx individuals based on their fur pattern is a central tool for researchers, because each lynx bears a unique spot pattern - as distinctive as a fingerprint. Based on the spots, individual animals can be clearly identified and recognized over years.

Eurasian lynx in the Bavarian Forest. Based on the fur markings - clearly visible here - lynxes can be individually identified.

Through systematic camera trap monitoring, the lynx population can be monitored very precisely. Each camera delivers on average hundreds of images of different animal species; the lynx photos are filtered out and evaluated by experts. Numerous population data can be obtained from the images: number of individual lynxes, their territory sizes and ranges, the sex ratio, as well as reproductive success (recognizable, for example, by whether females are photographed with young). Mortality rates can also be indirectly derived - when a known territorial animal suddenly no longer appears, this often indicates its death. Even the genetic status of the population is monitored using this data, for example by collecting and analyzing hair or fecal samples at camera trap locations.

Related topics

8 extraordinary destinations for photographing wildlife

Tiger Safari in India: Why Kanha Convinced Me

Bera Safari Guide: The best photo spots for breathtaking leopard pictures

Ecological significance of the lynx in the forest

As a large predator, the lynx stands at the top of the food chain and assumes the role of an apex predator in the forest ecosystem. Its presence has far-reaching effects on the balance of the entire habitat. Lynxes primarily hunt roe deer and other medium-sized ungulates (e.g. young red deer or chamois) as well as hares and foxes. By regulating these prey populations, the lynx can indirectly positively influence vegetation. In some areas it has been observed that the return of lynxes leads to better forest regeneration. The background: roe deer and red deer like to feed on young trees and shoots. If there are too many of these herbivores (high ungulate density), forest regeneration and biodiversity suffer because the growing trees are browsed. The lynx as a natural hunter ensures that roe deer do not proliferate - it keeps the forest ecosystem in healthy balance.

Roe deer are naturally rare in the Bavarian Forest.

The behavior of prey animals also changes in the presence of lynxes. Roe deer, for example, avoid open areas and behave more cautiously when they sense a lynx nearby. This "landscape of fear" causes the game to change its locations more frequently and allows plants in heavily frequented areas periods of recovery. In addition, lynxes often preferentially prey on weak or sick animals, which enables natural health improvement of wildlife populations. Although lynxes alone cannot replace a "forest helper" due to their small numbers, they do complement the range of natural processes in the forest. As a native predator, the lynx evolutionarily belongs in our forest ecosystems - its absence left a gap that is now being closed. The return of the lynx thus not only enriches biodiversity, but also stabilizes ecological processes in the forest.

Conservation measures and outlook

Given the low lynx numbers in Bavaria, comprehensive conservation measures are crucial to ensure the long-term survival of the species. At the legal level, the lynx is strictly protected - it is a strictly protected species under the Federal Nature Conservation Act and may not be hunted or killed. But paper alone does not protect animals: practical conservation projects, improved habitat connectivity and public awareness are decisive.

A central goal is to connect the isolated lynx populations and establish new populations in suitable habitats. As early as 2008, the Bavarian state government formulated in the Lynx Management Plan the goal of a "vital lynx population that inhabits all suitable habitats in Bavaria". However, this goal is still far from being achieved - outside the Bavarian Forest, large regions such as Spessart, Rhön or the Bavarian Alps are de facto lynx-free. To change this, active reintroduction projects have been intensified in recent years.

Female lynx with her young in front of one of my camera traps

A ray of hope is the project "Luchs Thüringen - Connecting Europe's Lynxes", which has been running in the neighboring Thuringian Forest since 2024. Since spring 2024, five lynxes have been released and settled there - two males from the wilderness of Romania and three females from zoological breeding programs. The aim of this project is to create a new population core at a central location in Germany that connects the separated populations (Harz, Bavarian Forest, Palatinate Forest). The releases are accompanied by intensive monitoring to precisely track movements, territory formation and the whereabouts of the animals. Indeed, the first results give reason for optimism: some of the released lynxes have already established fixed territories - an encouraging sign for a possible new population. In the Eichsfeld in northern Thuringia, a veritable record of evidence was achieved: Between December 2024 and March 2025, camera traps there delivered 65 lynx records (meaning not individual animals, but total detections), more than ever before since monitoring began in 2019. Particularly encouraging is that last year in this area, lynx cubs were born for the first time in over 200 years - two female lynxes raised offspring. These first reproductive successes are crucial for building a stable population. In the long term, Thuringia is intended to become a hub for reconnecting lynxes in Central Germany.

Work is also being done on population support in Bavaria itself. In northeastern Bavaria - outside the traditional Bavarian Forest area - orphaned lynxes from the Bavarian Forest have been raised in human care in recent years and then released in suitable forests such as the Fichtelgebirge, the Frankenwald and the Steinwald. These measures have led to the emergence of a small lynx population in northern Bavaria. However, the numbers there remain so low that without further support there is a risk of extinction. Conservationists therefore call for this practice to be consistently continued and possibly supplemented by additional releases. In addition - according to the unanimous opinion of experts - concrete reintroduction projects should finally be undertaken for the Alpine region in southern Bavaria, as large suitable forest areas would still be available there.

A run-over lynx is examined: lynxes repeatedly fall victim to road traffic.

In addition to active population support, reducing hazards is another focus. Many lynxes are killed in road traffic - the construction of wildlife bridges and crossings at dangerous road sections in the Bavarian Forest and surrounding areas could provide a remedy here. Even more serious is the illegal killing or poaching of lynxes. Unfortunately, only partial successes have been achieved in solving cases: several cases of lynx poaching did come to court, which sends an important signal that killing strictly protected species is not a trivial offense, but the proceedings were ultimately dismissed, so the perpetrators are still at large. In the future, it is important to continue these efforts and also to continue raising awareness among hunters and the population about the value of the living lynx in the forest.

Lynx conservation requires robust monitoring

Functioning monitoring is the foundation for all conservation measures. Only through reliable data can developments be assessed and appropriate measures taken - for example in the case of habitat loss, increasing fragmentation by infrastructure or toxic inputs into sensitive ecosystems. Particularly serious are illegal killings, which, as with the lynx, wolf or otter, account for a significant portion of mortality.

Without sound observation, many of these causes of death remain invisible - a serious problem for the protection of wild species. Only monitoring that also uncovers the "blind spots" in the distribution area can contribute to clarification and enable targeted investigations. Incomplete data collection, on the other hand, undermines the protection of the species.

How does Luchs Bayern e.V. engage in protecting the lynx in Bavaria?

Luchs Bayern e.V. is a non-profit conservation organization whose stated goal is the protection and promotion of the Eurasian lynx in Bavaria. Among other things, the association has been supporting the Bavarian-Czech project Trans-Lynx for cross-border networking of lynx populations since 2013. With professional activities - from public and educational events to photo exhibitions to lynx ranger operations - Luchs Bayern e.V. makes a clear statement.

In eastern Bavaria, lynx rangers are deployed - a project that specifically combats wildlife crime and is organized in cooperation with Luchs Bayern e.V. The topic of illegal persecution and the legal framework are also a central part of the commitment - for example in a handbook by the association that compiles methods of evidence collection and information on combating perpetrators.

Close cooperation with Luchs Bayern e.V. is an integral part of my photo project in Luchsland. Many of my images are now part of exhibitions such as "Luchse live!", contribute to environmental education and enable the protection of lynxes with valuable, emotional images. Technically, my camera traps also provide insights for monitoring - every recognizable lynx photo is a direct indication of territory boundaries, offspring or individual representation.

Conclusion

Lynx monitoring in the Bavarian Forest provides us today with more accurate data than ever before about Germany's secretive tufted-eared cats. This information is the foundation for all conservation efforts - because only what is precisely known can be effectively protected. The current population of around 95 lynxes in Bavaria is critically low, but through coordinated efforts there is hope: the return of the lynx to our forests is possible, as the success story in the Bavarian Forest shows. With further releases, cross-border cooperation and continued commitment to species conservation, the lynx in Bavaria can have a future. Every single camera image of a lynx in the forest is more than just a photo - it is a sign that the lynx in the Bavarian Forest lives and that we bear the responsibility to offer it a home tomorrow as well.

For a decade I have been documenting the life of shy lynxes in the Bavarian Forest with my camera traps in Luchsland – alone or as a family, from the play of their young to the life history of individual lynxes.
